Lance-leaf Tickseed

Coreopsis lanceolata

Coreopsis lanceolata, commonly known as Lanceleaf Coreopsis, is a vibrant perennial wildflower belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is native to most of the United States, parts of Canada, and Mexico. The plant features multiple erect stems and opposite, sessile, linear oblong leaves, primarily found on the lower half. Both ray and disk flowers are present, with the ray flowers having distinctive four-lobed tips. The large, showy flowers and deeply cut leaves make this plant easily identifiable.

Lanceleaf Coreopsis is favored by both novice and experienced gardeners due to its ease of propagation from seed. Typically, the plant takes until the second year to produce numerous blooms. Its self-seeding nature makes it ideal for prairie, meadow, and native wildflower plantings. Under the right conditions, it can form large colonies, resulting in stunning yellow flower carpets. Additionally, it performs well in border plantings if seed heads are regularly removed.
